KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Hundreds of children across the Midwest, with the majority reportedly in Missouri, have been hospitalised over the past week or two as a respiratory virus has spread through whole communities, prompting regional health authorities to mobilise additional medical staff to contain it. In signs of a possible regional outbreak of the virus, Colorado, Illinois and Ohio have all reported cases with similar symptoms, although the vast majority are located in Missouri, where Kansas City hospitals have been overwhelmed with patients requiring intensive care treatment. “It’s worse in terms of scope of critically ill children who require intensive care. I would call it unprecedented. I’ve practiced for 30 years in pediatrics, and I’ve never seen anything quite like this,” said Dr. Mary Anne Jackson, division director for Infectious Diseases at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
